Faith under Fire: A Look at the Multifaceted Persecution of Christians in Nigeria

Abstract

Oluwasegun Peter Aluko

Persecution has often been seen as a means of pulling down people who have determined to stick to their differing beliefs. Many Christians have over the years been persecuted because they believe in Jesus Christ. When persecution persists, it could lead to many Christians withdrawing their allegiance to Jesus Christ and the religion at large. Nevertheless, instead of retrogressing, many Christians who are often faced with one persecution or the other have been seen to have continued unabated and unashamedly. What precipitated this was the assurance of having an ‘unfading crown’ waiting for them in heaven. Thus, using socio-historical analysis, this article examined the various persecutions that Christians face in Nigeria. It looked at attacks from the government, inter-religion, and intra-Christianity where Christians face persecution from fellow Christians and the issue of family. The gains of persecutions were also highlighted which are to point towards the fact that persecution is to make Christians continue to wax stronger and not diminish.
