Experience
Gbenga Adejare teaches sociology in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary
where he also serves on different committees in the Faculty of Arts. He is also a member of the
Steering Committee for the African Studies Program at the University of Calgary. He holds a PhD
from the prestigious University of Ibadan. For his doctoral thesis, Gbenga interrogated the living
conditions of smallholder farmers in the extractive cocoa industry in Nigeria to unpack the
dynamics of exploitation and socially generated inequalities inherent in this industry. He
worked as an Associate Consultant with Kalube Consults, Uganda, between 2019 and 2022. He
was part of the 2017 research team of the Ford Foundation’s baseline study on inclusive
governance in Ikole Ekiti. Gbenga has authored and co-authored journal articles, book
chapters, and technical reports in local and international outlets. He is a member of the
Canadian Sociological Association (CSA), International Sociological Association (ISA), Young
Professionals in Agricultural Development (YPARD), and Lagos Studies Association (LSA). His
research interests include unpacking and theorizing lived realities of marginalization in
postcolonial spaces, and interrogating the context of intersectionality among minoritized
people.
